July 11 “Changed Lives in Post-Civil War Delaware County”, Dr. Eileen Scully,
Monday, July 11, 7 PM at Rachel Kohl Library, 687 Smithbridge Road, Glen Mills. - FREE

Life in the United States was never the same after the Civil War.  As toddlers, individuals born between 1836 & 1844 were within the sight, sound and reach of the last surviving veterans and widows of the Revolutionary war.  At the time of the Civil War, they were young adults.  As elderly and infirm folks, though, those who survived into the 1930s & 40s were the inspiration and prime constituency for Social Security.  They served, in effect, as a living bridge from the founding generation to the “greatest generation” of the 30s & 40s.  Their lives were changed indeed.  Dr. Scully’s report on the results of her research promises not only to enlarge our understanding of the American experience of the Civil War and after, but also to demonstrate history’s unavoidable impact on past and present life.   (Press Release)

July 25 General Mulholland, the PA 116th Regiment, and the Irish Brigade”, Steven J. Wright

The Pennsylvania 116th Regiment, along with the other four regiments of the famous Irish Brigade, was among those of all Union units that sustained the heaviest losses in battle during the Civil War.

The Irish Brigade often found itself in the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, including Antietam, Fredricksburg, and Gettysburg.  Unique in the Union army, indeed in both armies of the War, the Brigade specifically sought to demonstrate Irish-Americans’ love for their newly-adopted country.  To be sure, the story is not so simple, as a wide range of reasons motivated those thousands of Irishmen.  Himself Irish-born, General St. Clair Mulholland led the 116th, and was beloved by his men.

A native of Minnesota, Steve Wright is past president of the Old Baldy Civil War Round Table in Philadelphia.  He is a scholar and prolific author of books and articles on the Civil War and other American history topics.    (Press Release)
